John Brown (born 1887; deceased) of Grimsby, Lincolnshire, was an English contract bridge player and writer. He was the winner of the National Pairs, Northern Area in 1952.〔 His best-known book is ''Winning Defense'' (1952) which has been regarded as making a "major contribution to the technical development of the game".〔''The Bridge Players' Encyclopedia'', p. 669. ''The Official Encyclopedia of Bridge'' (OEB), 6th edition, published by the ACBL, 2001, in its Bibliography, Section M, gives it the same evaluative rating: making a "major contribution to the technical development of the game". OEB, 5th ed. (1994), Bibliography, Section D cites ''Winning Defense'' as "mandatory for a modern technical bridge library".〕 He was a contributor to many periodicals.
